Application Note

Sampling Accessories for Pressurized and Non-pressurized Lube Oil Systems

By the use of a sampling valve (SA325) and a Probe-on Tubing Assembly (SA327), oil samples can be drawn from pressurized systems and discharged into standard BTS sample bottles, after flushing the "dead leg".

For static pressure systems or systems under small vacuum, samples can still be drawn through the sampling valves, but using a Sampling Probe Adapter (SA328) which connects on one end to the sample port with a pressure tight connection and the other end, a plastic tube, can be inserted through the stuffing box of a standard 1/4 inch sampling pump (SA329). The adapter screws onto the test port, unseating the valve. When the stuffing box is tightened on the sampling pump and a bottle installed, the sample can be drawn into the bottle by pulling the handle of the sample pump. Of course, proper flushing of the dead leg is still necessary.

Note 1: Be careful to first flush out the valve, associated nipple or piping, and probe-on assembly using a waste bottle, before taking oil sample. Also use caution in taking samples to avoid spraying of the oil onto hot engine parts. Do not exceed pressure rating of valves
